Social Cohesion Minister continue to assess various facilities
Minister of Social Cohesion, Dr. George Norton and his team on Friday, conducted another round of site visits. Today, he toured the Carifesta Sport Complex, the Guyana National Stadium at Providence and re-visited the National Aquatic Centre, to inspect and assess the improvements needed at the various facilities.
Minister Norton noted that the Carifesta Sport Complex require some amount of rehabilitative work including repairs to the upper floor and proper maintenance of the outfield. He also highlighted the initiative of re-branding the facility in an effort to allow the complex to be self-sustaining. To this end, he said the ministry will, in due course, commence advertisement for utilisation of the centre from the public and sport organisations.
The minister said his revisit to the National Aquatic Centre is simply to evaluate the amount of sport gear stored at the location and to ensure it is distributed without being unintentionally withheld. The equipment is distributed among the administrative regions in an effort to promote sport to harness the personal, social and economic development of the young people.
During his inspection of the Guyana National Stadium, Minister Norton expressed satisfaction with the current condition and maintenance of the facility. It was highlighted that the management of the stadium will uphold the standards of the International Cricket Council (ICC). This has led to the decision to host all national events at the Jubilee Stadium and Durban Park.
Minister Norton has promised that such inspection-visits will continue, as he aims to assess the various departments under his purview so as to ensure that standards are maintained for the upkeep of these facilities.
